Robert Hooke was born on July 18, 1635, in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, to a family of a local church minister.
He began his career by working for the renowned artist, P. Lely, and attending Westminster School.

In 1653, Hooke enrolled at Christ Church College, Oxford University, where he became an assistant to Robert Boyle and collaborated with him on the development of the air pump. In 1662, he was appointed as the Curator of Experiments at the newly established Royal Society, and from 1677 to 1683, he served as its Secretary.
Additionally, from 1665 onwards, he held the position of a professor at the University of London.
