JOHNSTON, R.I. — One of Rhode Island’s lowest-key business leaders at the end of the month will relinquish day-to-day control of one of the state’s quietest success stories.

Subramaniam built a 40-year career at a Johnston-based insurance company that is one of the cornerstones of the Rhode Island economy.

An engineer by training, Subramaniam arrived in Rhode Island in 1974 to work as an analyst at what was then Allendale Mutual Insurance Co.

He rose to run the company and go on to lead its successor — Factory Mutual Insurance Co. — now known as FM Global.

Subramaniam is the only chief executive FM has had since it was formed in 1999. He was named company chairman in 2002.

Despite his lock on the corner office, Subramaniam is not a boardroom autocrat.

He’s the approachable type who sits at any empty seat he can find in the company lunchroom and whom workers address by first name.
